It's going to be a great Saturday at the market this week! We will have live music from Nate Staub, kids activities with Dayemi Parent Child Collective, balloon art from Tiny Twists, and always fresh local food and artisan goods from our fabulous vendors. This week's vendors include:

  • Thunder Ranch 5 (local pork, sustainably grown produce)
  • Mario's Mama Pet Bakery & Frozen Treats
  • Lick Creek Beef
  • Miller Farm (sweet potatoes and other seasonal produce)
  • Jen's Joe (coffee by the cup and beans by the pound)
  • La Conlina Linda Farm and B&B/ Plant a Seed (veganic baked goods)
  • Countrysprout Organics (carrots and Maryanne's Organic body care)
  • K-Noodles (gourmet pasta in a variety of different flavors and shapes)
  • Tigerlily Studios (creative and hats knitwear)
  • Hollow Pumpkin Farm (greens and other seasonal produce)
  • Buila Family Farm (greens and other seasonal produce)
  • Wild Alaska Seafood and Salmon
  • Bearden's Back Acre Farms, LLC (goats milk soaps)

We are once again without an egg vendor at this week's market. If you or someone you know is interested in selling eggs at the market, please contact us to get more information about how to sell eggs at the market. Additionally, there will be no high oiled sunflower seed from Stubenrauch Farms this week. Please check back in February for this great deal of local bird seed.

Not an egg producer but interested in selling at the market? No problem! We are always taking applications for new vendors at the market. Please email farmersmarket@eatsouthernillinois.org for more information about how to get involved with the market.

Local Wellness at the Market

We often forget to buy local when it comes to wellness and beauty products. The market features locally crafted syrups, tinctures, salves, oils and sprays to stock your medicine cabinet with. Dayempur Herbals and Countrysprout Organics are at the market each week with a selection of wellness products such as elderberry syrup, herbal salves, sunny baby sun screen and more!

Are you new to herbal wellness? Why not start with a bottle of elderberry syrup.  Dayempur Herbals has a wonderful elderberry syrup available at the market made with local elderberries, fresh ginger and honey. It is a great addition to your winter cold care routine!

Ever wonder what is in sunscreen? Many brands contain toxic ingredients or endocrine disrupting chemicals that can cause more harm than good.  Maryanne's Organic Sunny Baby line of creams will protect your skin without any harmful chemicals.

Who says you can't get local salmon in Carbondale?

This weekend we will have Wild Alaska Seafood and Salmon at the Carbondale Community Farmers Market. And how, might you ask, does Alaska qualify as local here in Southern Illinois? Think of it this way (as fisherman Tony says), “You buy your produce from the farmer, why not buy your fish from the fisherman?” There's not better way to get seafood here in the midwest than from dedicated fishermen and producers like Tony and Heather.

Salmon is an interesting addition to the market this time of year. Salmon is an excellent source of omega 3's and many essential nutrients and vitamins including Vitamins A, C, D and E, niacin and Vitamin B-12, all of which work together to be an amazing boost against winter ailments, and even seasonal affective disorder. To learn more about how eating fish can improve your health and mood, check out the article from Eating Well below.

Buy fresh fish can be intimidating if you've never cooked with it before. I've attached some links below for how to prepare salmon and some tasty recipes. Hope to see you at the market this weekend!
